I’m from the Deep South where there are many, many Chik-Fil-As that are closed on Sundays. How bout that for sabbath? Leaving the crazy system of money and fast food for one whole day - and being successful anyway. Sounds like God to me.

Right? I'm sure someone has figured out how much $ they lose by staying closed.

There are many good reasons to rest, but I'm thankful that I am no longer under the law. "There remains then a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his." Hebrews 4:9-10

As a person who has also struggled with how to define and adhere to Sabbath consistency, I am looking forward to the next post. I am curious about the folks who want the Ten Commandments posted everywhere so everyone will learn to follow them. Would they prefer to exclude that one commandment from the list to make it possible to still have their Sunday sporting events? Maybe they want to go "the whole nine yards"--but stop short of the tenth. 😉

Dorothy, this piece is so thought provoking and Prophetic. I appreciate the way you framed Sabbath as a way of living that resists an empire ideology.

When my kids were all tiny, I prepared meals for the weekend on Fridays, freeing me up to fully participate in whatever we were doing as a family on Saturday and Sunday. That practice crashed and burned when we started homeschooling, and I continue to wonder how someone like me who doesn’t even work full time could be so subject to the clock and the calendar.

Did that practice work for all of you as a family? (Did the kids help cook?)

Maybe if I had involved the whole family in the meal prep the practice would have survived homeschooling?

So so good. As someone who grew up “keeping the Sabbath” on Saturday very much like you describe earlier in your post, I so grateful for the freedom you describe here as I have learned so much in my adulthood about Sabbath really is. 🩷

Care to share what it looks like for you these days?

Sure!! It still looks like holding certain boundaries on that day, intentional rest and worship. We either attend church in person or online. But it is also more expansive in that we spend money (lunch after church, etc) and I will attend health related conferences - most of my advocacy work is in maternal health. Also, our son is on a baseball team and we allow him to attend games on Sabbath.
